The Midtown neck

Hours at a laptop pull the head forward. For every inch it moves, the muscles at the back of the neck and the tops of the shoulders work harder to hold it up. Over weeks they tighten, form tender knots and start referring pain into the head, between the shoulder blades and down the arm. Stress adds to it: most people hold tension in their upper shoulders and jaw without noticing.

Neck and shoulder problems we treat

  • Stiff neck and "tech neck" from screens and phones
  • Knots and trigger points in the upper trapezius and between the shoulder blades
  • Waking with a stiff or locked neck
  • Tension headaches that start at the base of the skull
  • Rotator cuff strain, shoulder impingement and frozen shoulder
  • Pain or tingling into the arm from an irritated nerve, after medical evaluation
  • Whiplash recovery once cleared by a doctor

Does acupuncture help neck pain?

Systematic reviews have found acupuncture reduces chronic neck pain more than sham treatment or no treatment, at least in the short term, and it is one of the few treatments shown to help both the pain and the related headaches. Cupping has also shown short-term benefit for chronic neck pain in clinical trials, which is why we often combine the two.

How a treatment works

  1. Find the source. Range-of-motion checks and palpation to find which muscles and trigger points are driving the pain.
  2. Release. Local needling and trigger-point release in the neck and shoulders, plus distal points on the hands and legs.
  3. Cupping or gua sha across the upper back to lift tight fascia.
  4. Calm the system. Points that ease stress, so the muscles stay relaxed after you leave.
  5. Desk changes. Screen height, phone posture and two-minute movement breaks you can actually keep up.

How many sessions?

A recent stiff neck often improves in one to three visits. Long-standing desk-related tension usually needs four to eight weekly sessions, then a maintenance visit every three to four weeks during busy seasons.

Cost and insurance

Treatment starts at $140 (follow-up, about 60 minutes). Follow-up acupuncture is $140 for about 60 minutes, with cupping or electroacupuncture included when needed, and packages lower the per-visit cost. We are an out-of-network provider: you pay at each visit and receive a superbill to submit to your insurer, and many PPO plans reimburse part of the fee. HSA and FSA cards are accepted. See every fee on pricing & insurance.

When to see a doctor first

See a doctor promptly for neck pain after a fall or car accident, neck pain with fever and a stiff neck, new arm weakness, or pain with dizziness, trouble speaking or vision changes.

Questions

Acupuncture for neck and shoulder pain: questions patients ask

How fast does acupuncture help a stiff neck?

Many patients move more freely by the end of the first session. Chronic neck pain usually takes four to eight weekly visits.

Is cupping or acupuncture better for neck pain?

Both have evidence for chronic neck pain, and they work well together. Most neck treatments here include both.

Can acupuncture help tension headaches from my neck?

Yes. Research supports acupuncture for preventing tension-type headaches, and releasing the neck and shoulders often reduces how often they come.

Can I go back to work right after?

Yes. Most people feel relaxed and looser. Cupping marks on the upper back are hidden by a shirt.
