What to Expect at Your First Acupuncture Appointment

By Dr. Orna Iskhakov, D.Ac. ·

If you have never had acupuncture, the idea of needles can be the biggest hurdle. Here is what actually happens, step by step.

Before you arrive

Eat a light meal, wear loose clothing and fill out your intake form. Bring a list of medications and any recent test results.

The conversation

Expect questions you might not expect, about sleep, digestion, thirst, temperature and your cycle. Chinese medicine uses these details to identify a pattern, so the treatment targets the cause as well as the symptom.

Tongue and pulse

Dr. Iskhakov will look at your tongue and feel your pulse at both wrists. Both give information about circulation, heat and cold, and how different systems are working.

The treatment

Between 6 and 20 hair-thin needles are placed, often on the arms, legs, back or ears. You rest for 25–40 minutes in a warm, quiet room. Most people feel heavy and relaxed; many fall asleep.

Afterwards

You may feel calm, energised or a little sleepy. Drink water and take it easy for the evening. Many people notice their best night's sleep in weeks.
